I am pleased with this summer movie season thus far. Wolverine did not suck, and Star Trek was AWESOME YAY I KINDA WANT TO GO SEE IT AGAIN RIGHT NOW(but not for $8 because I am cheap).

I've never been a TOS girl, except for the movies (especially VI and um, also maybe the books a little bit). TNG and DS9 and VOY, yeah, but not TOS (or ENT, sorry Ronnie, I just never could watch it except for those two episodes and I complained about those anyway). So...the "reboot" didn't really mean a whole lot to me in terms of being unfaithful to the characters because I didn't know their younger versions very much anyway. But I know the important lines and the general histories and all that.

And...one other thing before I get into the spoilers. I never really got the whole "Sylar is a hottie" thing. But, um, Quinto as Spock?

Oh. Okay, now I get it. :)

(Maybe it's the eyebrows?)

YAY I LOVE TIME TRAVEL MOVIES!!

The opening was really cool. The silence of space? Well played, Abrams, given the way Whedon brought that off with Firefly. Seeing Spock Prime and getting that time travel part out there right off the bat was good, too.

Kirk-as-jackass was amusing. Kirk getting his ass kicked repeatedly was also very amusing. There were definitely some great Kirk moments (him sitting in the captain's chair with his legs crossed at the end, the Orion girl, there was something he said that was so completely Shatner that I laughed but now I can't remember what it was) but he was extremely likeable, which is not always something I associate with my mental image of the character. (Maybe because I fall on the Picard side of the "best captain evar" fight?)

SULU KICKED SOME ASS. I APPROVE.

NemoNero was okay. I think Bana was just having a LOT of fun running around with his cape and playing at Star Trek. Hee. His "Hey, what's up?"-like hail was kind of funny, too. And [livejournal.com profile] rinnaldo noted that he was definitely one of the most successful villains ever--he actually achieved his goal of DESTROYING AN ENTIRE PLANET in front of Spock--andSpock!

Also, HOLY SHIT THEY COMPLETELY DESTROYED VULCAN. Neat. This is, um, game-changing. I wonder if Tuvok exists now?

I LOVE, love love love that it's Spock/Uhura. I don't know exactly what it is about their relationship that's so wonderful--it just IS. Maybe because it's this lovely pre-existing thing that doesn't actually involve Kirk (or any other triangular aspect), and Spock's reactions to their relationship are great, and his being with a human woman like his father was... Normally I'd be taking every opportunity to make slashy jokes but I really like this pairing.

Uhura's pretty great herself, of course, too. I loved all her earrings and her boots and her not taking any shit from some kid hitting on her in the bar (yeah, fuck you, Kirk!) and her getting all annoyed because she IS the best and she SHOULD be on the Enterprise, dammit! :D

And...yeah. Spock. I wore my chibi Spock shirt today and all the kids were giving me the Vulcan salute. Haha. Anyway. I loved Quinto's delivery of "live long and prosper" with some real bite to it, and the eyebrow was used minimally but it was great. His slow boil emotionally was really interesting to watch, too, and when he finally went after Kirk, it was great. Spock meeting Spock Prime was a nice touch, too; all that Nimoy's version is and represents being handed off to the next generation...sort of. :D

Did anyone else think that Spock Prime was now going to go, uh, father a Vulcan colony somewhere out there? Heh.

I kinda really want to go see it again. Yay, Star Trek! :D :D :D

Are you sure it was the eyebrows that made Quinto work for you? Maybe it was the way he rocked the bowl cut?

I also really dug Spock/Uhura. Maybe it was because they had an established, mature relationship built on mutual respect, which almost never happens in epic action movies? It was like an adult oasis in a desert of emo romantic drama.

However, Spock/Uhura or no Spock/Uhura, there is ALWAYS room for slash jokes. Spock Prime was trying to play yenta to his young self and Kirk! And besides, Kirk always has McCoy, Sulu, and Chekov to eyefuck. And maybe even Scotty too, if he isn't already doing it with that weird, teeny alien.

but he was extremely likeable, which is not always something I associate with my mental image of the character.

I seriously surprised by how much I actually liked Kirk too. Maybe he was likable because his jackass tendencies were balanced out by all the times he got his ass kicked, injected with crazy shit, and constantly failed at getting laid during the movie?

IMO, that last scene came off as Shatner because Pine was lounging in the chair, smirking, and trying to seduce the entire room while crossing his legs at the top of his thighs. What guy does that? Captain Kirk, that's who.

SULU KICKED SOME ASS. I APPROVE.

THIS. Though I would never, ever, ever join his fencing club. Ever.
