I don't know how to feel about that.

Yep. :) If I don't pick up it's because I'm worshipping the vending machine gods.

saw that this weekend. I want to support the Rabbi but since when does a polite request include the words "or I'll sue..." complete with attorney? I agree with what he seems to be trying to do but his method bites.

maybe but I think it's the lawsuit thing that makes me a lot more sympathetic to the airport than I ordinarily would be. I mean what's next? Pagans sue if there's no recognition of Soltice? Muslims over Ramadan? Kwanzaa? By envoking the threat of a lawsuit, he completely changed the playing field from the airport doing it to be respectful to "do it or else. I'm guessing when they consulted their lawyers, they were told that giving in to the threat of one lawsuit would open the door for half a dozen more. I'm afraid this Rabbi's lawyer is right on one thing. It's got the potential to make the Jewish community look like the Grinch but the responsibility for it doesn't rest solely on the airport.

I think THAT'S what made me upset, the suing part. Also, when you're an airport with your decorations up already, how do you go about acquiring and installing a giant menorah on short notice? Let alone worrying about who else you are going to offend and what other symbols you need to acquire?

If we were talking about a nativity scene, I think I would be a little more sympathetic. Trees with bows? I'm a little more skeptical.

*nods* that was the part that hung me up yeah. I was watching on CNN and i was nodding along until I heard the part where he apparently went into it *WITH* a lawyer and that slammed on the brakes for me. There's what, at *LEAST* four or five major religions celebrating a holiday around this time of year (I can think of a around that many right off the bat) and all of them probably represented in that particular part of the country. It wasn't one potential lawsuit, it was more like ten.

*g* I pretty much said the same thing when discussing it with someone last night. I mean, the nativity scene is one thing but a tree? I severely doubt every person in the world who puts up a Christmas tree this year is celebrating the birth of Christ. I'd lay odds a good chunk of them don't even believe in him.

(and YAY! Grinch *G*)

I agree with their decision to take all the trees down. Christmas trees in public places, like airports, make me uncomfortable. If they wanna put up holiday iconography, put up more than just the Christian-themed ones. If not, take em all down. I seriously could do without any decorations of any kind around this time of year. This season is already depressing enough without being forced to see reminders of something you can't stand every-fucking-where you go.

Dear airports, Walmart, and all the rest of you public places who feel obliged to put up Christmas decorations: There are people who are not Christian out there. Have a little courtesy. If you want to put up decorations, include something for everyone, or don't put up anything.
