Having a...moment.
May. 15th, 2004 05:34 pm UofM attempts to convince donors to give them more money.
*sighs*
Okay.
I had a lot tumbling around in my mind about my rather irritated response to this article. It was something along the lines of "budget getting tighter, yes, student tuition going up, why isn't donor money helping to reduce tuition, HEY, WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP DONATING MONEY TO THE ART MUSEUM AND NOT THE EXHIBIT MUSEUM?"
And...you know, I really don't know why.
"People give if they think they can make a difference," she [Maxine Frankel, who along with her husband, donated $10 million dollars to the art museum] said. "I never went to the museum as a student, and that's one of the reasons I'm so excited. This new addition will engage the students."
If she didn't go to the Art Museum while she was here, did she go to the Exhibit Museum? And if not, why aren't they donating any money there? There's plenty that could be done to engage students more; think of how many people there are on campus that have no idea there's a Natural History Museum even though they ALL stop by it during orientation. Isn't it possible that we're even more in need of money-for-engaging-students than the Art Museum, which sits on the street right across from the Student Union?
Or, more pessimistically, do people think that they can't make a difference at the Exhibit Museum? I certainly hope it's not that.
I don't really have anything terribly coherent here, unfortunately. I guess it pretty much boils down to "People should give the Exhibit Museum more money" or something like that.
